David Hackett Souter (pronounced /?su?t?r/; born September 17, 1939) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1990 until his retirement from the Court effective June 29, 2009. He filled the seat vacated by William J. Brennan, Jr.

Sandra Day O’Connor (born March 26, 1930) is an American jurist and was the first woman to become Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1981 until her retirement from the Court in 2006. O’Connor was appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
