Sonia Sotomayor was born in The Bronx, New York City on June 25, 1954. She has been serving since August 2009 and is the Court’s 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice (Puerto Rican decent), and its third female justice. In May 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor to replace retired Justice David Souter.
David Hackett Souter (pronounced /?su?t?r/; born September 17, 1939) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1990 until his retirement from the Court effective June 29, 2009. He filled the seat vacated by William J. Brennan, Jr.
Sandra Day O’Connor (born March 26, 1930) is an American jurist and was the first woman to become Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1981 until her retirement from the Court in 2006. O’Connor was appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. (born April 1, 1950) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and has served on the court since January 31, 2006.
Stephen Gerald Breyer (born August 15, 1938) is an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Appointed by Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1994, and known for his pragmatic approach to constitutional law, Breyer is generally associated with the more liberal side of the Court.
